The Sub-Zero cooling fan motor, and what it protects
The condenser fan pulls room air across the condenser coil so the heat carried out of your food can leave the cabinet. It is not part of the sealed system: Sub-Zero’s warranty names the compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier and connecting tubing, and this motor is none of them. That matters because when it stops, the cabinet behaves exactly like a failing sealed system while the actual repair is an ordinary component swap.

A condenser coil with no air moving over it is functionally a blocked coil, even if it is spotless. Heat cannot leave, head pressure climbs, and the compressor runs longer and hotter trying to reach a setpoint it can no longer make. On 700 Series and Designer Series units it is at the base behind the kickplate, which is where the phrase base fan comes from.
The base position is also why Sub-Zero warns that a kickplate fully covered by custom cabinetry can cause sealed system failure on those series. A fan drawing air through a plinth that a joiner has panelled over is recirculating hot air, and the condenser behind it never gets a chance.

Motors fail in three ways here: the winding goes open and it does nothing, the bearings dry and it seizes or screeches, or it runs slowly enough to move too little air while appearing to work. The third is the one that gets missed, because the fan is visibly turning.
